Past perfect: come funziona
Il past perfect (had + participio passato) indica che un'azione passata è avvenuta prima di un'altra azione o di un altro momento del passato: When we arrived, the film had started. Compare spesso con when, by the time, already e before, nel discorso indiretto e nel periodo ipotetico di terzo tipo. Se l'ordine è già chiaro, spesso basta il past simple.

Errori comuni
Sbagliato:
When I arrived, the train already left.Giusto: When I arrived, the train had already left.
Azione anteriore: had + participio.
Sbagliato:
I had went there before.Giusto: I had gone there before.
Serve il participio: gone.
Sbagliato:
Yesterday I had visited my aunt.Giusto: Yesterday I visited my aunt.
Un solo evento passato: past simple.
Sbagliato:
If I knew, I would have told you.Giusto: If I had known, I would have told you.
Il terzo tipo richiede il past perfect.
