過去形と過去進行形：使い方
過去進行形（was/were + -ing）は、過去のある時点で進行中だった行動を表します：At 8 pm I was cooking. 過去形と組み合わせると、その途中に起きた短い出来事を表せます：I was cooking when the phone rang. 過去形だけなら、終わった出来事を順に述べます：I cooked, ate and went to bed.

誤:
I was watch TV when you called.正: I was watching TV when you called.
was/were + -ing。
誤:
When the phone was ringing, I answered it.正: When the phone rang, I answered it.
短く終わった動作は過去形。
誤:
They was playing football.正: They were playing football.
you, we, they には were。
誤:
I was knowing her well.正: I knew her well.
状態動詞は進行形にしない。
