Past perfect: ใช้อย่างไร

Past perfect (had + past participle) แสดงว่าการกระทำหนึ่งในอดีตเกิดก่อนอีกการกระทำหรือเวลาหนึ่งในอดีต เช่น When we arrived, the film had started มักใช้กับ when, by the time, already และ before รวมถึงใน reported speech และประโยคเงื่อนไขแบบที่ 3 ถ้าลำดับเหตุการณ์ชัดเจนอยู่แล้ว ใช้ past simple ก็มักเพียงพอ

ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบบ่อย

   ผิด: When I arrived, the train already left.

   ถูก: → When I arrived, the train had already left.

   การกระทำที่เกิดก่อน: had + participle

   ผิด: I had went there before.

   ถูก: → I had gone there before.

   ใช้ past participle: gone

   ผิด: Yesterday I had visited my aunt.

   ถูก: → Yesterday I visited my aunt.
