There is é usado com substantivos no singular ou incontáveis e there are com substantivos no plural para dizer que algo existe ou está em algum lugar: There's a park near my house. There are two banks on this street. Nas perguntas, is ou are vem primeiro (Is there a lift?), e nas negativas se usa any: There aren't any chairs.
