Reported speech: how it works

Reported speech tells someone what another person said without quoting the exact words. After a past reporting verb, tenses usually move one step back: "I'm tired" becomes She said she was tired. Pronouns, time words and place words change too, and reported questions use statement word order: He asked where I lived.
