Articles: a, an, the: how it works

English has the indefinite articles a/an and the definite article the. Use a/an with a singular countable noun mentioned for the first time or meaning one of many (a dog, an hour). Use the when the listener knows which one you mean (the dog next door). Use no article for general plural and uncountable ideas: Dogs are loyal.
