Past Perfect Tense: cara kerjanya

Past perfect (had + past participle) menunjukkan bahwa satu tindakan di masa lalu terjadi sebelum tindakan atau waktu lain di masa lalu: When we arrived, the film had started. Bentuk ini sering muncul dengan when, by the time, already, dan before, juga dalam reported speech dan conditional tipe ketiga. Jika urutannya sudah jelas, past simple sering cukup.

Kesalahan umum

   Benar: → When I arrived, the train had already left.

   Tindakan yang lebih dulu: had + participle.

   Salah: I had went there before.

   Benar: → I had gone there before.

   Gunakan past participle: gone.

   Salah: Yesterday I had visited my aunt.

   Benar: → Yesterday I visited my aunt.

   Satu peristiwa lampau: past simple.

   Salah: If I knew, I would have told you.

   Benar: → If I had known, I would have told you.

   Conditional tipe ketiga perlu past perfect.
